Whooping cough cases confirmed in Henry Co.

Darlene Prince

NAPOLEON -- Two laboratory-confirmed cases of whooping cough (or pertussis) have been confirmed in Henry County by the Henry County Health Department.

The health department is also investigating 13 additional suspected cases among local residents, who are primarily children. Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that causes a harsh, prolonged cough that can last up to six weeks.

It is spread through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs and has been increasing in Ohio in the past decade.

As of now, there are no cases of whooping cough in Defiance or Fulton counties.

Henry County Health Department will hold special clinics to vaccinate against whooping cough on Monday and Tuesday from 7-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. The cost for children will be a Medicaid card or $10. No children will be turned away due to inability to pay. The cost for adults is $45.

The health department has sufficient vaccine for children, but supplies for adults are limited until another shipment comes in next week...

Unioto confirms 2 cases of pertussis (Ross County)
BY JONA ISON ? Gazette Staff Writer ? March 27, 2010

Parents of sixth-grade Unioto students were put on notice Friday about two pertussis cases that have arisen.

A letter was sent home with students after the school had two confirmed cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, within the past two weeks. School nurse Kelly Hill said the students were in two different sixth-grade classes, but they want everyone to be cautious to prevent an outbreak.

"It's not out of control, but the health district wants us to get a handle on it before it spreads," Hill said.

Those students in the same class as one of the affected children are being advised to see a doctor and go on an antibiotic.

"I know a lot of people think when we ask to prophylact an entire class it may be overkill, but with the outbreaks we had last year ... if you don't jump on it and try to stop the disease, you're going to see it get out of control," said Kathy Wakefield, Ross County Health District director of nursing...

Whooping cough remains a local health concern
Seventh-graders will be required to get booster

BY MARK CAUDILL ? News Journal ? May 3, 2010

MANSFIELD -- Whooping cough has never really gone away...

...Large-scale vaccination campaigns minimized the disease in the 1960s and '70s, but cases have increased since the 1980s. Ohio reported 1,096 cases of whooping cough in 2009, up from 628 the year before.

As a result, Ohio is requiring students who will start seventh grade this fall to get another booster shot against whooping cough, along with tetanus and diphtheria...

...In 2006, the county had only one reported case of whooping cough. The number jumped to 23 in 2007, but leveled off with 27 cases in 2008 and 24 last year. So far this year, there have been four reported cases.

Whooping cough spike alarms physicians

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH, OHIO | MISTI CRANE | Wed, Jul 14, 9:24 AM

July 14--An unusual number of central Ohio residents are coming down with whooping cough, prompting concern about the potential for severe illness and death in infants and others who are especially vulnerable.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial infection characterized by fits of coughing sometimes followed by a "whooping" indrawn breath. It is carried in respiratory droplets, which can be spread easily through coughing. Infections can last weeks or months.

As of Monday, Columbus Public Health and the Franklin County Board of Health had confirmed 135 cases. At that time last year, they had logged 76 cases.

City and county health officials know of another 89 suspect cases this year.

...
Of the 135 infections in Franklin County, 20 have been in babies less than 1 year old; 14 of those were in babies younger than 6 months, LeMaile-Williams said.

Ten of the sickened people -- eight of them infants -- have been hospitalized.

...
It's unclear where the spike in Franklin County cases is headed or what is driving it, but both LeMaile-Williams and Cunningham said they're worried, particularly because the increase is coming at a typically quiet time.

This year, Ohio is requiring a booster against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis before students enter seventh grade, at which point protection from earlier vaccinations begins to wane. Parents with philosophical or religious objections to the vaccine may opt out.
