    Norovirus cases increase across London

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=storybody><!-- S BO --><!-- S IIMA -->Cases of the winter sickness bug, norovirus, have shown a significant increase in London since the start of the year, the NHS has reported.

The NHS and Health Protection Agency (HPA) have reported 244 outbreaks in the capital rising from 42 in December but many cases have gone unreported.

The virus tends to last one to two days causing nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

It remains infectious 48-hours after symptoms have stopped and can be easily passed from person-to-person.

The NHS has said people who have contracted the sickness should stay at home to prevent it spreading.

Sufferers have also been advised to take over-the-counter remedies, drink plenty of fluids and let the illness run its own course.

Dr Brian McCloskey, Director of the HPA in London, said:

"London continues to be hit by norovirus as we move through the winter months with a surge in outbreaks since the new year.

"Personal hygiene must also be good so make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after going to the toilet."
