The city of Gweru has declared an outbreak of typhoid in Mkoba 15, 18 and 20.

Gweru Town Clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza said council received results from an independent laboratory confirming that there is typhoid in some parts of Mkoba high density suburb.

In the past weeks, there have been several reports of diarrhoea cases and four died in suspected typhoid cases.

Gwatipedza said tests indicate that the water from borehole in the three suburbs is not safe for drinking...

Gweru typhoid death toll rises

The typhoid death toll in Gweru has risen to five amid reports that more than 350 residents who contracted the water-borne disease have been treated.

Government has since taken urgent measures to address the problem which includes providing water treatment pills to every household in the city.

The move to provide water treatment pills comes after Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa condemned borehole water in the city which he said is unsafe for human consumption.

More than 350 residents have been treated for typhoid and many others are still admitted at different health institutions in the city. The first case of typhoid in the city was recorded on July 23.

Dr Parirenyatwa who visited patients admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital, Mkoba 1 Clinic and Mkoba 13 Clinic to assess the impact of the outbreak, said patients admitted or seeking treatment for typhoid were spread across the city contrary to earlier council report that the outbreak was confined to just a section of Mkoba suburb covering Villages 15, 18, 19 and 20...

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has advised the Sports and Recreation Commission to suspend the National Youth and Paralympic Games indefinitely due to the
typhoid outbreak in Gweru.

Health and Child Care permanent
secretary, Gerald Gwinji, recommended the cancellation of the games.

?At the moment, the outbreak is not yet under control as cases are on the rise.
On that note, the Ministry suggests two options regarding the proposed youth games to be conducted in Gweru City...

Fears over typhoid spreading

The typhoid outbreak in Gweru City is suspected to have spread to other towns in the Midlands Province after reports of suspected cases of the water-borne disease in Zvishavane, Kwekwe, Shurugwi and Mberengwa.

Speaking during a briefing with Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa, Midlands Minister of State Cde Owen Ncube said there were reports that people in the four districts were showing symptoms similar to those of typhoid.

Minister Ncube said there was high possibility that it could be typhoid because people in the Midlands Province were very mobile and commute to Gweru from surrounding towns on a daily basis.

?Minister (Parirenyatwa), we have reports that there are people in Zvishavane, Kwekwe and Shurugwi who have similar symptoms to those that people are experiencing here in Gweru.

?The Midlands capital could be the source of those sicknesses because most people from these towns work in Gweru and they commute every day,? he said...

This strain of typhoid is not responding to traditionally used medicines such as ciprofloxacin and health workers have resorted to using the last line of antibiotics, azithromycin in defence against typhoid while waiting for approvals to embark on mass vaccinations.

Cases of drug resistant typhoid are on the increase not only in Zimbabwe but also Sub Saharan Africa and are increasingly becoming common with a number of other bacteria, virus, fungi that causes Tuberculosis, HIV and Aids and other Sexually Transmitted Infections...

Typhoid spreads to Masvingo

Masvingo City has recorded its first typhoid case in three years as water shortages that have dogged the city for more than a week persist.

A six-year-old boy yesterday tested positive for the water-borne disease at Masvingo General Hospital and was being kept under quarantine in the children's ward when The Standard visited to cross-check the report.

The father of the child was also put on typhoid treatment and had bought the drugs at a local pharmacy. Pharmacists at one drug outlet said they were not surprised that the city had recorded a typhoid case because of the shortage of potable water in the town since 22 August...

United as a coalition working towards improved social service delivery in the Harare Metropolitan Province,

Gravely Concerned by the sudden outbreak of Cholera and typhoid in Glenview Area 3 and 8 (Glen View North Constituency) that has mainly affected 71,72,73,74,75 and 76 Crescents; recently Glen View 1 and 2 (Glen View South Constituency) that has mainly affected 54, 55, 56 and 56 Crescents, and concerned that the outbreak is emanating from a spate of unattended to sewer bursts in Glen View. Concerned by outbreak in Budiriro 1 (Budiriro Constituency) as a result of numerous shallow and unprotected wells where residents are accessing water.

Outraged, by the needless loss of life of six (6) residents in the said area as well as more that 40 confirmed cases of typhoid as of today the 7th of September 2018...

Glen View high-density suburb in Harare has been hit by a typhoid outbreak, the Harare City Council said on Thursday.

Rights groups have warned that the situation may get worse because of a shortage of clean drinking water in the area.

Zimbabwe: 850 Typhoid Cases Reported in Harare

Harare has recorded at least 858 new typhoid cases in the last six months, with the city also battling a surge in diarrhoea cases, council reveals.

The local authority has acknowledged that it is to blame for outbreak of water-borne diseases due to its failure to constantly supply clean water and delays in attending to sewer bursts or leakages.

The hardest hit areas were Glen View and Budiriro, where water samples from wells showed that the precious liquid was contaminated with faecal matter.

In a report following a recent special council meeting, Harare Town Clerk Engineer Hosiah Chisango noted the number of diarrhoeal and typhoid cases in the city was still "too high".

"There are 858 typhoid fever cases seen from January 1 to June 2019. There are no recoded deaths from typhoid fever," he said...
