Four hospitalised after eating infected chicken

Kasama - Four members of one family of Bwebe Village in Kasama are admitted to Kasama General Hospital with severe diarrhoea and vomiting after eating a chicken suspected of being infected with new castle disease.

National Chomba aged 14, Margaret Chomba six and Chugs Chomba seven years are admitted in ward E while Rita Chomba also 14 has been hospitalised in Ward J with severe diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pains after eating a chicken which is said to have been infected with new castle, a chicken disease.

Father to the children, Bernard Chomba, a Debt Collector at Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company in Kasama who confirmed the incident to ZANIS said his family decided to slaughter and eat the chicken after it showed signs of sickness as they did not want it to die naturally.

Mr. Chomba explained that on Thursday morning as he left for work he instructed his children to slaughter the chicken before it died.

Explaining the ordeal Mr Chomba and his wife also partook of the chicken but his children who ate it on Thursday and Friday started vomiting with diarrhea on Saturday and were rushed to hospital where they were immediately admitted.

Hospital staff found attending to Rita told ZANIS that the 14-year old girl had developed an unusual temperature of 34.7 degrees but said her condition had stabilised saying three of her brothers were even much better.

The condition of the children stabilised after replenishing the fluids they lost.

Most people, especially in villages believe that it was safe to eat a chicken or any domestic animal suspected of being infected with any disease as long as it was slaughtered before it died of the infection.

The hospitalisation of the four raised concern among locals following the outbreak of Avian Influenza H5N1 popularly known as Bird Flu which has affected some parts of Europe and Africa.

New Castle Disease is another emerging disease that was initially thought to not infect, or result in illness, morbidity, or mortality in humans.

The first emergence of potential harm came as conjunctivitis (Richardson, et al, 2005) and was published by the USDA.

Now, this disease is reported to be causing abdominal pains, severe diarrhea and vomiting.
