Kafue Gorge hospital in Mazabuka, Zambia records suspected swine flu case
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Health authorities at Kafue Gorge hospital in Mazabuka have recorded
a suspected swine flu case. Staff from the information department
told ZANIS [Zambia News and Information Services] in Mazabuka that
the suspected case involved a student from Kafue Gorge Regional
Centre who showed symptoms similar to those of swine flu.
The staff, who did not want to be named however, said the named
patient was attended to at the out-patient department on Friday
afternoon [11 Sep 2009] between 11:00 hours and 13:00 hours and was
briefly quarantined and later discharged at 14 hours. The staff also
said a team of medical personnel from Mazabuka district health office
led by acting district director of health, Martha Musweu, visited the
area to investigate the case.
They also disclosed that to date, no swine flu vaccines had been sent
to the area despite threats of the disease. Musweu could not comment
on the matter as her mobile phone was switched off. But sources at
Mazabuka district health office confirmed having recorded one case of
suspected swine flu at Kafue Gorge but declined to give further details.
However, Namalundu ward councillor Beatrice Halooba who had rushed to
the hospital said preliminary investigations had established that the
disease was not swine flu but an ordinary flu. But Chief
Mwanachingwala has challenged the Ministry of Health in Mazabuka to
state whether the district was geared for any possible outbreak of
swine flu. He said as far as he was concerned, the district was not
prepared because there had never been any deliberate sensitisation
programmes carried out by health staff despite the district receiving
a lot of foreigners at some companies. Chief Mwanachingwala said the
District Epidemic Preparedness Committee had not convened to discuss
how prepared the district was in the event that swine flu broke out.
And Mazabuka district commissioner Tyson Hamaamba expressed ignorance
on whether the district had received swine flu vaccines.
