A significant increase in suspected diphtheria cases has recently been reported in Yemen between epidemiological week no 33 and 44. A total number of 118 suspected cases including 10 deaths (CFR: ing 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%). 8.5%), were reported in 10 governorates of the country. Majority of these cases? about 103 were reported from Ibb governorate, including 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%)...

• Diphtheria is making an alarming comeback in Yemen, with 189 clinically-diagnosed cases and 20 deaths reported in 13 governorates in the last three months, as of 27 November. Ibb governorate is the most affected with an estimated 72% of reported cases. A vaccination campaign targeting 300 000 children started and further vaccination rounds are scheduled to target three million people in December. Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease which can cause devastating epidemics, mainly affecting children. Its resurgence is a direct symptom of the collapsed health system...

On 29 October 2017, the WHO team in Sana?a, Yemen received reports of suspected cases of Diphtheria from Ibb governorate. From 13 August through 21 December 2017, a total of 333 suspected cases including 35 deaths (case fatality ratio = 10.5%) have been reported from 20 governorates. In the absence of laboratory-confirmation, the current situation is being treated as an outbreak of suspected diphtheria based on clinical diagnosis.
The majority of cases have been reported from Ibb Governorate (187 suspected cases). Seventy-nine percent of cases are less than 20 years old while 19% are children under 5 years old. There has been a similar number of male and female suspected cases (three suspected cases had no information about their sex). Sixty-one percent of the suspected cases have never received any vaccination against diphtheria.
As of 21 December 2017, there were 35 deaths among suspected diphtheria cases. Fourteen of the deaths occurred in children under five years old...

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that at least 471 people in impoverished Yemen have contracted diphtheria, a bacterial disease that has been killing one in 10 Yemenis since the outbreak started in the war-torn country in mid-August last year.

The U.N. agency?s spokesman, Tarik Jasarevic, made the disturbing announcement on Thursday, adding that the west-central province of Ibb and the western province of Hudaydah were the hardest hit by diphtheria, which is easily spread between people through direct physical contact or the air.

?The overall case fatality ratio is 10 percent,? he said, noting that 46 deaths had been recorded since Tuesday.

Back on Dec. 13, WHO announced that more than 280 suspected diphtheria cases and 33 associated deaths had been reported in Yemen, which showed a worrying increase in the number of infected people in a three week?s time. The disease last appeared in the Arabian Peninsular country in 1992...

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A diphtheria outbreak has killed 73 people in war-torn Yemen since August, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday.

In a statement, the UN agency said some 1,294 suspected cases of diphtheria have been recorded in 20 of Yemen?s 23 provinces.

It listed Ibb and al-Hodeidah provinces in central and western Yemen as the hardest-hit by the disease...
