PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW)-- A second person in Portage County has died from complications related to H1N1 flu.
The Portage County Health Department reports that the individual had underlying health conditions.
In July another Portage County victim died because of H1N1 complications. That victim also had an underlying medical condition.
Portage County Health Officer, Faye Tetzloff says, ?Our thoughts are with the family and friends during this difficult time.? Out of respect for the family and patient confidentiality laws, the Portage County Health Department is not releasing the individual?s sex, age, race, or location of residence.
Tetzloff reminds folks that ?For most people, the 2009 H1N1 flu is not severe. However, the risk of hospitalization or death is higher in young children, pregnant women, individuals with compromised immune systems and those with other chronic illnesses. We expect more H1N1 vaccine to be available in the coming weeks. We recommend that those individuals who are at high risk for severe disease from H1N1 influenza get vaccinated to protect themselves against H1N1 when vaccine becomes available."
The vaccine is currently available for:
?Pregnant women Persons who live with or provide care for children aged less than 6 months
?Children aged 6 months through 4 years
?Children and adolescents aged 5-18 with chronic medical conditions that place them at higher risk for influenza-related complications
?Health care and emergency medical services personnel who have direct contact with patients or infectious material.
Additionally, H1N1 vaccine will be available for adults aged 19-64 with chronic medical conditions that place them at higher risk for influenza-related complications after November 18.
