A small school district in western Wisconsin is being hit hard by the flu.

North Crawford School District officials tell NewsChannel 8 50% of the district population, or about 85 students, were out sick Monday with flu-like symptoms.

North Crawford Elementary Principal Brandon Munson says most of the students are in high school. Munson says Tuesday some students had returned to class, but about 30% of the district population is still out sick.

Munson says there has been one confirmed case of H1N1 in the district.

Munson says the school district, which has one K-12 building, had to cancel a volleyball tournament Monday due to the illnessses, and out of respect for the other schools. The tournament has been rescheduled for next week.

School officials stress to parents that if their child is sick, they should stay home. Munson says district staff is continuing to encourage proper hygiene, including hand washing and disinfecting, in classes at all grade levels.
