WHO warns of worsening conditions in Western Pacific if non-communicable diseases are not treated

MANILA, Sept. 28 ? The World Health Organization (WHO) said non-communicable diseases account for eight out of every 10 deaths in the Western Pacific Region and the situation is expected to worsen in countries in economic transition if urgent measures are not taken.
According to the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office in Manila, an estimated 26,500 people die every day from non-communicable diseases in the Region with over 20,000 deaths occurring in developing countries.
Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic pulmonary diseases top the list of deaths.
The health body said 80 percent of premature heart disease, stroke and diabetes; and 40 percent of cancer could be avoided through healthy diet, regular physical activity and not smoking.
Statistics show that in the region, 75 percent of diabetes and 90 percent of new cancer cases diagnosed each year are in developing countries.
The WHO cited in China, lost productivity due to non-communicable diseases between 2005 and 2015 will have cost over US$ 550 billion.
During the the 59th WHO regional Committee, the international health body endorsed the Western Pacific Regional Action Plan for Non-communicable Diseases.
In endorsing the strategic plan, the regional committee noted that aside from the health burden, the economic impact of early deaths and disability from non-communicable diseases can slow national development due to lost productivity. (PNA)
