The workers in the ebola outbreak need help, many areas are not mapped and you can help. All you do is compare bing maps and add roads and buildings, etc. to the map one small quadrant at a time. The workers on scene then use a handheld satellite device that can access the mapping programs so that they can move quickly to find a patient, retrieve a body or escape a dangerous area.

There are 46 pages of mapping for many projects, ebola is sprinkled throughout.

There are many people working on this, every building, road, river placed on the map helps tremendously.

This is an interesting quote on the Monrovia map request from MSF.


There is a resurgence of the Ebola outbreak, and a risk of the epidemic spreading with the multiplication of sites of infection. In the urban areas, there humanitarian organizations necessitate detailed tracing including all the buildings. The World Health Organization (WHO), DWB/MSF (MSF) or the Red Cross / Red Crescent societies (redcross) are deploying in Liberia and Sierra Leone where sites of infection have been identified.

I took a look at this request and I think it is beyond my level of computer skills but it quickly occurred to me that I might be able to interest some people who do have great skills and could help with this. I live near Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA and I belong to the local Humane Society. We have had several different service groups give us a hand with various projects and so I sent an email to one service group in hopes that they may be interested and that they would also help spread the word to others at VT.

I heard back from the Geographical Society at VT and they are excited about being able to help in this small way. They are going to try and pass the word on to friends at other colleges too.
