Bird flu hits another province of Vietnam

HANOI, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Another Mekong Delta province Vinh Long of Vietnam was confirmed of being hit by the bird flu, said are port of the Vietnam's Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Friday.

The bird flu broke out on a local farm on Wednesday, killing 250 out of a flock of 1,100 ducks, said the report.

Duck samples tested by the provincial animal health bureau were positive for the H5N1 virus, said provincial health officials, cited by the local newspaper The Youth on Friday.

Local animal health authorities had been implementing measures to curb the spread of the bird flu virus to nearby areas, including the culling of the remaining ducks, said the department.

Currently, Vietnam reports four provinces hit by avian flu including two central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Quang Ngai and two Mekong Delta provinces of Dong Thap and the newly-confirmed Vinh Long, said the department.

New outbreak of bird flu reported in Vinh Long

Samples taken from 13-day old ducks at a household in Thanh Loi commune, Binh Tan district in southern Vinh Long province have tested positive for the A/H5N1 virus, according to the provincial Animal Health Department.

This is the first time bird flu has been detected in Binh Tan this year.

The virus was also found in 1,200 ducks belonging to farmer Le Minh Tuan, which had not been vaccinated. He said that from May 5-12, his flock of ducks had shown symptoms of a flu-like disease and some 200 ducks were later found dead. On May 13, the provincial Animal health Department took samples from the flock and sent them for testing at a veterinary agency in Can Tho city.

On May 14, the provincial Animal Health Department culled all the remaining ducks, disinfected the immediate areas, and vaccinated other flocks in the districts. They also began a campaign to raise public awareness of preventative measures.

Bird flu returns to Mekong Delta province

Bird flu has made its way back to Vinh Long Province this year as provincial animal health officials on Wednesday found duck samples positive for H5N1 virus.

The district health officials had tested samples from more than 200 ducks that belonged to Le Minh Tuan in Nguyen Van Thanh Commune, Binh Tan District of the Mekong Delta province after the ducks died between May 5 and 10.

The officials Thursday destroyed the remaining 900 ducklings in the flock.

None of the 13-day-old ducks had been vaccinated.

Vo Van Theo, head of the district?s Agriculture and Rural Development, said his officials have begun tallying and vaccinating poultry in the commune and neighboring Thanh Trung Commune.

According to the Ministry of Health, provinces are considered bird flu-free once no cases have been detected for 21 days.

Around 13 provinces nationwide have reported bird flu cases this year, with four people infected - all fatally. They were two adults in northern provinces Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh, a three-year-old in the Mekong Delta?s Dong Thap Province and another adult from the north central province of Thanh Hoa last month.
