Vietnam reports more dengue fever cases, death toll at 60
Vietnam has detected 68,000 dengue fever patients, including 60 fatalities since the beginning of this year, posting a rise in both cases and deaths over the same period last year, Vietnam News Agency reported Monday September 24.

China tamiflu maker fined US$500,000 for fake bird flu drug
Shanghai Xinwei Chemical Co Ltd has been fined RMB 4 million (US$533,333) for manufacturing fake Tamiflu, an anti-viral to which multinational drug manufacturer Roche holds an exclusive patent for, domestic media reported on Friday. Tamiflu, which contains the active ingredient oseltamivir, is an anti-viral used in the prevention and treatment of flu, and is highly sought after as it is the main drug treatment for human bird flu infections.

China denies being source of pig disease
China is not the source of blue ear disease outbreaks among pigs in Vietnam and Burma, Ministry of Agriculture officials said on Monday September 24, adding that the disease in China closely resembles that found in the United States.

Complacency on bird flu will be deadly, says WHO

The World Health Organisation warned on Monday September 24 against complacency in the fight against bird flu, saying another human influenza pandemic is inevitable sooner or later. "I am often asked if the effort invested in pandemic preparedness is a waste of resources," director general Margaret Chan told a regional meeting of the world organisation.
