Police asked to probe vaccination suspicion
02/08/2007
VietNamNet Bridge ? The country's department for animal health has asked fraud investigators to launch a probe into bird flu outbreaks that hit a disease-free poultry farming project in the Mekong Delta.
The Japanese-funded project is being carried out in 10 provinces in the delta, including Dong Thap where nine communes of three districts are benefiting from the project.
Hoang Van Nam, deputy head of the department, told the Daily on Tuesday that a clarification should be made over why chickens there were infected with the disease although they had been vaccinated.
Any fraudulent act, he stressed, would be strictly dealt with if found.
If the vaccination procedure was strictly observed in line with the department's guidance, the probe should be directed toward Trovac-AIV H5 vaccines supplied by Viphavet, he said.
Investigators will initially look into a chicken shipment supplied for Dong Thap farmers by Luong My Poultry Breeding Co. based in the northern province of Ha Tay.
"Investigators will inspect whether or not the company's chickens had been inoculated against the disease," Nam said.
Duong Quoc Nghia, deputy director of Dong Thap's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said there was sufficient documentation indicating that almost 58,000 chickens supplied to local farmers had been given Trovac-AIV H5 vaccines.
Cao Xuan Dam, general director of Luong My, said the chickens had been inoculated with the vaccines stocked since 2006.
However, Nguyen Thi Thanh Tinh, managing director of Viphavet, said that last year her company supplied 320,000 doses of vaccine, which expired on May 22 this year, for Luong My.
The only vaccine shipment of this year comprising 50,000 doses which Viphavet supplied for Luong My was delivered on June 13. Meanwhile, Luong My made delivery of chickens to Dong Thap farmers on May 25.
