New bird flu strain mobilises local authorities

(25-10-2007)

HCM CITY ? A dangerous strain of bird flu virus, first isolated in southern China, has been detected in the northern region and Mekong Delta, a Government bird flu agency has said.

The Fujian-like strain had appeared in China?s southern Fujian Province in March 2005 and caused human infection and deaths, the National Steering Committee for Avian Flu Control and Prevention said.

At a meeting of the committee held in Ha Noi on Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said several strains of bird flu virus had been discovered in Viet Nam. They were becoming increasingly dangerous and complex, he warned further.

To prevent outbreaks of the disease around the country, he instructed the Animal Health Department to increase the surveillance on birds being transported from the northern provinces.

Quarantine measures should also be closely monitored to ensure a supply of safe products in the market, he said.

He called on local authorities to crack down on the smuggling of poultry over the China border to prevent the spread of different strains of the virus.

He told provinces to take active measures to prevent outbreaks in winter, the peak season for bird flu.

These measures include a close watch on poultry farms, slaughtering and breeding facilities and hatcheries, as well as ensuring the vaccination of birds.

Earlier this month, bird flu resurfaced in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh, which had last month become the last province in the region to be declared free of the deadly disease. ? VNS

From this statements we can assume that in Vietnam:
- now (oct. 2007) exists several Fujian-2005-like strains
- they are increasingly dangerous and
complex - means enaugh different?
All this strains are sent to the WHO database, or not?

Human-transmissible bird flu found

A Fujian-like bird flu virus was found in poultry in Vinh Long Province and northern Vietnam, heard a meeting Tuesday.

Tests done in two national and international laboratories, the Veterinary Institute and the National Center for Veterinary Diagnosis, confirmed the findings.

The name of the mutated virus, Fujian bird flu, is taken from the Chinese province where the new strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus was found in March 2005. The virus is transmissible from birds to humans.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat asked relevant agencies to strictly control the trading and transportation of poultry and poultry products across borders and in local markets to prevent the spread of this dangerous strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus.

This is not a happy find. Anyone know any more about this particular strain?

Re: Vietnam: new bird flu strain mobilises local authorities

Thank you Dr. Niman. Since it has been on the flu circuit since 2005 what I'd really like to know is how much is out there and how far it has spread. And, I'd like to know how many people have been infected with this strain.

All of the reported human cases in China in 2005 and 2006 were Fujian as were some of the recent cases in Thailand.

Re: Vietnam: new bird flu strain mobilises local authorities

Thanks again Dr. Niman. Certainly opens up all kinds of nasty possibilities.

Re: Vietnam: new bird flu strain mobilises local authorities

From Crofsblog:

For example the so-called 'Fujian-like lineage' within the antigenically distinct Clade 2.3 of H5N1 would be designated Clade 2.3.4,

with other distinct clade 2.3 branches called 2.3.1 and 2.3.2 and so on, while the 'Qinghai lineage' would be designated Clade 2.2.

Edit, More on naming of H5N1 strains:

The suggestions for numbers has been around for some time (over ayear)

http://www.recombinomics.com/phylo/HA_Vaccine.html

and largely based on human isolates

Clade 1 - 2004-2005 human isolates from Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia

Clade 2.1 all human isoaltes from Indonesia since 2005

Clade 2.2 Qinghai strain - all human isolates west of China

Clade 2.3 Fujian strain - all human isolates from China and recent isoaltes from Thailand

Re: Vietnam: new bird flu strain mobilises local authorities

Thank you Dr. Niman, Dutchy, and Shannon!

I mixed into this post of Fujian, a Luohu type flu virus (China), and a yesterday news in FT that the strains of the influenza aiming for North America appear to be drifting and mutating, thinking that maybe is time that the scientists change the WHO protocols for the annual seasonal flu shot.

I know that the bureaucracy is enormous when something must be changed at the WHO level, but we saw many WHO debates for pandemic preparedness, when at the same time the same organism can't change, and abreviate the flu virus for vaccine choosing procedures (I know that that is also guessing).

Maybe, I am in wrong, but, finaly now, it's obviously that an 1 year period for choosing, and 4-6 months for production, is extremely obsolete - looking at the speed of the virus changes, like the eggs production technology.

Why a WHO speaking of pandemic vaccine when we can't get an matched ordinary seasonal flu vaccine which virus strains we know in advance min. 3-4 months?
The same thinking is for an multi-strain PRE-pandemic vaccine.
Imagine what will be with a (promised) 6 months production time for a pandemic vaccine if a pandemic pop out? - Nothing.

If I am not wrong:
- the strains of the influenza aiming for North America appear to be drifting and mutating
- Zhong said that Luohu type flu virus, which is prevalent in Guangdong, is a variant of the influenza A/Solomon Islands virus.
- obviously something is not "ordinary" in the South hemisphere seasonal flu 2007 in Australia / South Africa / New Zealand
- the WHO did not take this strains from Australia/SA/NZ, and AT LEAST TRY TO form a new vaccine, to be produced, PRIOR dec. 07 / jan. 08 - MAYBE IN TIME FOR PARTS of the North hemisphere

Sorry, but I must said that even if I know that nothing will change.

This year's flu shot missing new strains of virus

CTV.ca News Staff
Canadians heading out to get their annual flu shot may want to know that the strains of the influenza aiming for North America appear to be drifting and mutating, raising questions about how much protection this year's flu vaccine will offer.

and
FT thread:
Re: Millions at risk as flu pandemic conditions ripen in China
Zhong said that Luohu type flu virus, which is prevalent in Guangdong, is a variant of the influenza A/Solomon Islands virus. The Luohu strain is not a 100percent match with vaccines for the strains recommend by the WHO, but the present vaccines are still effective in preventing influenza."

and

FT thread:
Re: NZ_influx of regular flu patients leaves hospital in gridlock_13sep07
If we know that the standard vaccine production needs 4 months, and that obviously something is not "ordinary" in the South hemisphere seasonal flu 2007 in Australia / South Africa / New Zealand,
and that the composition of the influenza vaccine for the 2007/2008 season (Northern Hemisphere winter) for the A Wisconsin types are
from year 2005 - 2 years old, and that A/New Caledonia is not included,
and that in the European part of the Northen hemisphere, the flu coming in january/february = after 4 months from now;
2. Why the WHO did not take this strains from Australia/SA/NZ, and form a new vaccine, to be produced in time dec. 07 / jan. 08 for this part of the North hemisphere?
That will save lives!
