Binh Duong reports first human bird flu case



The southern province of Binh Duong has confirmed the first case of bird flu on humans and the patient has been carried to Ho Chi Minh City for treatments.

The patient is Truong Phu Son, born in 1990. He was living in a house in Phu Loi Ward, Thu Dau Mot Town, according to the provincial Department of Health.

He returned to his home province of Thanh Hoa during the Lunar New Year holidays late January, and has come back to Binh Duong to work. On February 17, he had high temperatures and breathing difficulty, and was brought to a local hospital.

On Feb. 23, he was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Diseases as his conditions became worse.

Blood samples later showed that Son was infected with the deadly bird flu virus A/H5N1.

Health officials said where he was infected with the virus was still unknown.

Health officials also quarantined those who had contacts with Son in his rented house in Phu Loi Ward and disinfected the area with chemicals.

On February 17, he had high temperatures and breathing difficulty, and was brought to a local hospital.

On Feb. 23, he was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Diseases as his conditions became worse.

I hope that they will report the treatment that was used to save this individual. Antiviral treatment is generally only successful within 48 hours of infection. Truong Phu Son probably did not start receiving H5N1 influenza treatment until he was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City at least six days after onset. According to the above post, he was treated for at least 10 days.

Vietnam MOH confirms male, 22, positive for H5N1 bird flu - Binh Duong province

5 March 2012 - The Ministry of Health has reported a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case is a 22 year-old male from Thanh Hoa province who lived and worked in Binh Duong province. He developed symptoms on 17 February 2012 and first sought medical care on 21 February 2012. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases on 23 February 2012 and received Oseltamivir upon admission. He is currently still in hospital.

Confirmatory test results for influenza A (H5N1) were obtained on 25 February 2012 by the Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, a WHO National influenza Centre.

Epidemiological investigation indicates that the man was involved in the slaughter and consumption of ducks. Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City and the local health sector are conducting the investigation and response. Close contacts of the case with fever have received prophylaxis and are being monitored; all have been confirmed as negative for H5N1 by PCR.

To date, of the 122 confirmed cases in Viet Nam, 61 have been fatal.

Third bird flu patient of the year recovers, leaves Vietnam hospital

Vietnam?s third bird flu (H5N1) patient of this year was discharged Tuesday after being treated for nine days in a Ho Chi Minh City hospital.

A Tuoi Tre newspaper report quoted a doctor as saying that Truong Phu Son, 22, was no longer in a critical condition.

He is now in stable health, said Dr. Nguyen Thanh Truong, chief of the Contagious Diseases Ward at the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

However, he still needs weekly check-ups, since damage caused to lungs by H5N1 virus-related pneumonia cannot be fully healed, Truong said.

Truong also said Son?s case was as critical as cases recorded in 2003 when bird flu first broke out in Vietnam. Without timely and intensive treatment he could have not been able to recover, he added.
