Vietnamese officials say they've recorded the country's first human bird flu death in nearly two years, while more cases of the H5N1 virus have recently popped up elsewhere.

Dang Thi Thanh of southern Kien Giang province's health department says test results confirm that an 18-year-old man died of the disease Monday after being hospitalized a day earlier.

She says the man worked at a duck farm in neighboring Can Tho City when he fell sick with a high fever and breathing problems. His house has been disinfected and those who were in contact with him remain under surveillance.

Other human cases have recently been reported in Cambodia, Indonesia, Egypt and China.

The virus is typically spread from direct contact with infected poultry.

An 18-year-old man who tended ducks in Can Tho City (southern Vietnam) died of H5N1 flu after having coughs and high temperatures, becoming the first person to die of the avian flu this year.

Danh Ni hailing from the southern province of Kien Giang developed flu symptoms a week ago. His condition got worse after he took some medicine.

He was later hospitalized with breathing difficulties.

Medical staff took a sample and sent it to the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute.

Ni died on January 16 at the Kien Giang General Hospital in his hometown.

Test results show he was positive for H5N1.

Le Hoang Anh, Director of the Kien Giang Health Department, said Ni caught H5N1 virus from the ducks which he tended...

Avian influenza ? situation in Viet Nam

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case was an 18 year-old male from Kien Giang Province.

He developed symptoms on 10 January 2012 and was admitted to hospital on 14 January 2012 but died on 16 January 2012.

Confirmatory test results for influenza A (H5N1) were obtained on 17 January 2012 by Pasteur Institute, the WHO National Influenza Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.

The man was reportedly exposed to ducks.

Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City and the local health sector are conducting outbreak investigation and response.

He is the 120th person in Viet Nam to become infected with the H5N1 virus; to date, 60 of these cases have died from complications of the disease.
