HANOI, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's National Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute said the country's latest human case of bird flu infection was a 11-year-old boy from northern Ha Nam province who died on March 14 after four days of treatment in Hanoi capital, Vietnam News Agency reported Monday.

The institute's tests showed that specimens from the boy named Do Van Huong from Thanh Liem district was infected with bird flu virus strain H5N1, the news agency quoted Nguyen Lap Quyet, director of the Ha Nam Health Department, as saying.

The boy fell ill on March 5, and was admitted to the Ha Nam General Hospital in the province on March 8, and the National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi on March 11.

In late February, 10 out of a chicken flock raised by the boy's family fell ill and died gradually. Then, the his family slaughtered some healthy chickens of the flock for meal.

Relevant provincial agencies have disinfected and detoxificated the affected area, and selected samples from fowls in the area for bird flu testing.

In June 2007, a 28-year-old woman named Phan Thi Xuyen from thedistrict died from bird flu.

To date, Vietnam has reported a total of 106 human cases of bird flu infections, including 52 fatalities, in 35 cities and provinces since bird flu started to hit the country in December 2003. However, the World Health Organization has yet to confirm the latest case.

Vietnam currently has 11 localities having poultry being hit by bird flu: Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, Tuyen Quang, Hanoi and Lao Cai in the northern region, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Quang Nam inthe central region, and Soc Trang and Vinh Long in the southern one, according to the country?s Department of Animal Health.

Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.

Although no bird flu cases on human have occurred in HCMC for two years, administrators are on the lookout for the disease.

The city is an international commercial hub and tourism venue and influenza has broken out in both Hong Kong and other locations in the region, so caution and proactive measures are necessary.

Bird flu has reoccurred in southern provinces such as Soc Trang and Vinh Long, Dr. Phan Cong Hung from the Community Healthcare Department at Pasteur Institute told reporters on March 17.

In response, local authorities have increased their supervision, he added.
Some residents have been in close contact with infected birds, so the city needs to raise public awareness concerning the disease. Moreover, human flu is threatening the city because tourists from all over the world may transmit their illnesses.

The department has requested that the city’s medical administrators take the steps needed to deal with any infection that may arise.
Refresher courses will be held for mobile inspection teams.

Preventative medical centers must closely monitor those who have fallen ill and set up quarantine areas to contain the disease as soon as possible. Mobile inspection teams must detect outbreaks, carry out disinfections, and quarantine the infected area.

Quarantine centers in coordination with southern airport authority and border guards, patrols and such nationwide to intensify the medical inspection of travelers who are suffering from flu or fever, particularly those from bird flu affected areas.

Medical workers, especially those at border gates, have been advised to keep a close watch on those patients suspected of having contracted the H5N1 strain of the virus by placing them in quarantine and isolation wards at Tropical Hospital.

Tropical Hospital and Children Hospital 1 and 2 offer refresher courses on treatment and curing skills for H5N1 victims.

Medical infirmaries strengthened their surveillance on the suspects who are kept in quarantine and isolation wards till tests carried out show that they are negative for the H5N1 strain of the virus.
Hospitals are asked to stockpile medicines, necessary chemicals and equipments for prompt fighting actions.
Health Department will send its men to inspect preparation tasks in medical clinics in 24 districts.:tiphat:

Bird flu has killed an 11-year-old boy in northern Viet Nam, the country?s 52nd death from the disease so far, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The boy was Nguyen Van Huong from the northern province of Ha Nam. He was hospitalized on March 8 in the province after eating chickens from his family?s stock where some fowls had died a few days before. Then he was transferred to the National Children?s Hospital in Ha Noi, and died on March 14.
This is the fifth death from the H5N1 virus so far this year. The virus remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans.
The boy was the 52nd person to die of bird flu in Viet Nam since the H5N1 virus began raging through Asian poultry stocks in late 2003. The country has reported 106 H5N1-infected persons so far.
Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy head of the National Institute for Infectious and Tropical Diseases, said the recent death rate among the H5N1-infected persons exceeded 90%.

Bird flu has affected 14 countries for a total of 368 human infections. Of these, 234 have resulted in death.
Viet Nam has so far recorded 105 cases, including 51 deaths. This year, four patients died of Type A-H5N1 virus in the provinces of Tuyen Quang, Hai Duong, Ninh Binh and Phu Tho.

In related news, the Vietnamese Department of Animal Health has put the two provinces of Lao Cai and Quang Binh on the list of bird flu infected localities.

Four samples taken from 300 dead ducks on a farm in Quang Nam Province were found to be H5N1 positive. Some 4,800 ducks on six farms in the same province were culled. However, the provincial authorities have yet to confirm this report. :tiphat:

HCM City: H5N1 suspected in death
15:14' 27/03/2008 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge ? A 20-year-old patient from the central province of Nghe An died at HCM City-based Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital on March 26, with clinical symptoms of type A/H5N1 flu.

Before going to the hospital, the patient showed typical symptoms of type A/H5N1, for example coughing, fever, breathing difficulties. Doctors diagnosed the patient with acute pneumonia but they didn?t reject the possibility of type A/H5N1.

According to the patient?s family, bird flu was reported in the area where the patient lives in Nghe An. On March 15, the patient slaughtered a duck. He then returned to HCM City to work and got ill.

Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital has sent the patient?s blood sample to the HCM City Pasteur Institute for testing.

On this occasion, HCM City Department of Health told local residents to be vigilant against bird flu.

Test Negative for Bird Flu
The body of a patient tested negative for H5N1, Dr. Nguyen Huy Dung, director of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, told journalists at a press conference held March 27. The test was carried out at the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City.

The patient's relative says that he eats duck 10 days before being hospitalized
The patient, born in 1988 in the central province of Nghe An, was transferred from Binh Dan Hospital to Pham Ngoc Thach. He coughed and experienced fever and difficulty breathing. He was diagnosed with acute pneumonia on March 25.

Doctors suspected that he contacted H5N1 because bird flu was found in his region and he had eaten duck 10 days before being hospitalized.

With 106 infected and 52 dead, Viet Nam is now the nation with the second highest number of bird flu victims, according to the Department of Preventative Health and Environment of the Ministry of Health.

Avian influenza has infected 373 people in 14 countries and killed 236 since 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

Indonesia, the hardest-hit nation, experienced 105 deaths. Although there is as yet no evidence of human-to-human transmission, WHO?s experts warn that avian flu is highly pathogenic.

Five Vietnamese and 11 Indonesians have died of H5N1 in spite of receiving immediate treatment.

The deadly virus can travel not only on waterfowl, but also on other animals, according to WHO. For example, four Owston palm civets died of the flu in Cuc Phuong National Park in the northern province of Ninh Binh.
