Avian flu returns to Delta with fresh outbreaks in provinces

HCM CITY ? Bird flu has reoccurred in the Mekong Delta provinces of Tra Vinh and Dong Thap, according to the Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The new bird flu outbreak in TraVinh was detected early last week on August 20 at a farm in Phuoc Hung commune in Tra Cu District where 150 dead waterfowl tested positive for the deadly avian flu virus H5N1.

The dead animals were among the 450 poultry on a farm that had yet to receive vaccinations against bird flu.

Local veterinary workers have teamed with district authorities to cull all the remaining infected poultry and disinfect affected areas to prevent the spread of the virus.

Vo Be Hien, director of Dong Thap Animal Health Department in the Mekong Delta, said blood samples of poultry being used by the agricultural extension programme tested positive for the virus H5N1.

Hien warned residents of the possibility of a further outbreak because the one-day-old breeder chickens had not been vaccinated by suppliers.

Four provinces nationwide are still reporting cases of bird flu, including Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Dong Thap and Tra Vinh.

In the four provinces, the virus H5N1 has been detected in no more than one commune in each province.

In early May, 10 localities across the nation including nine provinces and one city reportedly were struck by bird flu.

Both local and Food and Agriculture (FAO) animal health officials have also urged local people to be vigilant against further outbreaks of bird flu.

They urged vaccination of animals, surveillance of poultry farming and transport as well as the disinfecting of affected areas and the culling of infected animals. ?VNS

The National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Prevention and Control has urged localities to hasten measures to prevent diseases in poultry and animals.

The committee pointed to a severe lack of public awareness, subjectivity of local authorities and inefficient supervision and detection systems as the main reasons behind the complex development of several kinds of diseases.

A number of localities have not taken appropriate measures quickly in order to prevent the further spread of diseases when they occur.

In an attempt to better the prevention and control of diseases in animals and poultry in the last few months of the year, the committee also asked the chairmen of provincial and municipal People?s Committees nationwide to speed up awareness programmes and take preventive measures to mitigate the losses to farmers, ensure sustainable husbandry development and protect public health.
