Comment - It seems that this story is about dead swifts &/or swallows rather than poultry. Salangane are swifts & swallows that make edible nests. - Ro

Two questions if anyone has the answers:-

1. Is Ninh Thuan Province anywhere on a migratory route out of Eastern China or vice versa?

2. NS1 or other genetics experts. How can the risks of recombination/ reassortment of H5N1 with H7N9 be assessed?

Ministry tells province to declare H5N1 epidemic

In an urgent dispatch issued Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested south central Ninh Thuan province authorities to declare an H5N1 avian flu epidemic and destroy all the infected birds.

The Veterinary Office for Zone 6 also said it has asked the provincial Veterinary Sub-department to seal the entire swallow nests weighing 20 kg at two breeding centers, where more than 5,000 swallows have died since late March and a number of the dead bird samples have been teased positive with H5N1.
