UMd testing bird flu vaccine cultured in cells, not eggs
BALTIMORE A bird flu vaccine being tested at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is cultured in laboratory-grown cells and not chicken eggs like traditional vaccines.
The new method allows for the production of larger quantities of vaccine because drug companies would not be limited by the supply of specialized chicken eggs used for the manufacture of traditional flu vaccines.
Doctor James Campbell, the lead investigator on the study, says the small percentage of people who are allergic to a protein found in chicken egg-based vaccines also would be able to receive the vaccine.
The Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking 100 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 years to 40 years old to participate in the second stage of the trial.
