Vaccination for influenza A (H1N1) in priority groups in Portugal complete
The vaccination campaign against influenza A (H1N1) in Portugal managed to cover ahead of schedule, all priority groups, said the Portuguese Minister of Health, Ana Jorge.
The fact that adults need only one dose, as initially envisaged that need two, anticipating possible vaccination of the latter group, which includes those under 12 years, said the Portuguese Minister of Health was quoted by day 28 local press.
Ana Jorge explained that this decision has nothing to do with surplus vaccine, explaining that Portugal made a reservation and purchase of six million to three million vaccines, when two doses were needed.
When questioned about a possible extension of the vaccination campaign to other groups, besides those considered priority, the minister replied that vaccines still apply to persons in priority groups and that only after the technical committee of vaccination indicate who the new priority groups.
The vaccination campaign against influenza pandemic began on 26 October, intended to protect the most vulnerable citizens, reduce the presence of severe cases and ensure continuity of essential medical services.
The first phase of group "A" priority began with the vaccination of pregnant women with associated diseases and health professionals who play vital roles.
On 2 November, simultaneously with the first phase, started the vaccination of citizens that make up the second phase of group A, with the inclusion of healthy pregnant women with six or more months of gestation.
On November 16 the campaign was extended to the group "B", with priority for children under two years old, and on December 21 was extended to children 12 years of age for vaccination was scheduled for January only. (Xinhua)
