A total of 11.9 million people in Benin, Liberia and Sierra Leone will be vaccinated from next Monday against yellow fever in the largest immunization campaign carried out so far against this disease, announced today the World Health Organization ( WHO).

"A high immunization coverage will prevent outbreaks of yellow fever, a disease that is very difficult to diagnose in the early stages of infection," says the coordinator of the unit readiness and response to epidemics of WHO, William Perea.

He also recalled that the vaccine is extremely effective because "a single dose ensures complete protection."

In this campaign, which is the first to be launched against yellow fever simultaneously in different countries will complete the preventive vaccination of the 13 countries considered most at risk in Africa.

Since 2007, a total of 29 million people have been vaccinated in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Senegal, Togo and Sierra Leone.

Perea said he hoped that by 2015 were carried out vaccination campaigns in all African countries at high risk.

This campaign is organized jointly by WHO, UNICEF, the National Societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent, and the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders
