U of R warns of mumps outbreak on campus

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Close to 20 University of Richmond students may be suffering from the mumps. The university is warning the campus about the outbreak, which heightened since early March. Virginia Health Department officials say they have lab confirmed five to ten cases of mumps. Another ten patients showed symptoms which may be resulting from the virus. University officials say they wasted no time in warning everyone on and off campus. Emails were mass sent to students, parents, faculty and staff...

Mumps virus infiltrates campus, scares students

As of Tuesday, 15 cases of mumps have been confirmed on campus, said Dr. Lynne Deane, the director of the Student Health Center. Tests administered to other students are still being processed, she said.

In total, 39 students have been tested for the virus since January, Deane said. Mumps is a communicable viral illness and typically carries symptoms like fever, head and body aches, tiredness and swollen or tender glands in the jaw, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Web site...

UR expects to see additional cases through semester

Virginia Commonwealth University reported its first case of mumps Thursday as the outbreak at the University of Richmond continues to spread.

UR has had 40 probable cases since Jan. 24 and expects to see additional cases through this semester, said university spokesman Brian Eckert. Of the cases, 20 have been confirmed by laboratory tests.

VCU has one confirmed case ? a student living off campus ? and two suspected cases, spokeswoman Anne Buckley said...

The mumps count has climbed to 20 confirmed cases at Richmond, and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is investigating suspect cases that have popped up outside of campus, said Dr. Lynne Deane, director of the Student Health Center.

Since January 21, there have been 51 students tested for mumps. Only 20 have been confirmed, so 31 more students still await test results and could potentially have the virus.

Three students at Virginia Commonwealth University are also waiting for test results, and the health center there has confirmed one case as of Wednesday, said Dr. Margaret Roberson, the medical director for University Student Health Services...

HARRISONBURG -- Colleges across Virginia have reported cases of the mumps and now, James Madison University is affected by the illness.

Administrators say they have one confirmed case of the mumps. In Virginia, more than 45 cases of the mumps have been reported...

RICHMOND – At the urging of state health authorities, the University of Richmond has set up a series of free mumps vaccination clinics for everyone at the school as an outbreak continues to spread on the campus...

The majority of cases are part of an outbreak of mumps occurring at one university in the central region of the state. As investigations continue, additional cases are possible. It is also possible that the cases under investigation will decrease as investigations are completed and cases are ruled out...
