HYDERABAD: Nallakunta Fever Hospital continues to remain the ground zero for viral fevers.
On Saturday, the outpatient wing of the hospital was bursting at its seams.
The outpatient department, designed to handle 200 patients, received 1,900 patients from different parts of city.
Utter chaos prevailed in the crammed interiors of the outpatient block.
The bedlam prompted BJP Amberpet MLA G. Kishan Reddy, who visited the hospital to interact with patients and check hospital facilities on Saturday, to inquire how the waiting patients were not infecting each other.
?They are so close to each other that they can pass on their ailment to others. The block has to be developed from scratch,? Mr. Kishan Reddy said.
On an average, during normal days, the number of admissions hovers between 20 and 25 per day. However, owing to the spate of viral fevers, the number of admissions has increased to 50.
The BJP MLA interacted with patients for over an hour in the hospital and noted their problems.
?Construct new block?
?The State government should construct a new multi-storeyed outpatient block in place of the old one. There is a huge line of about 150 patients outside the drugs distribution counter alone. Sick women and children are having a tough time because of unhygienic conditions,? he said.
Angry patients and attenders poured their hearts out. ?They don?t put clean bed sheets because my son has gastro. There are mosquitoes because they have dumped junk in the backyard. The dark and dingy outpatient rooms are crammed when the seasonal ailments are at its peak,? said Mohammed Azhar, whose son has been admitted to the hospital.
Virology lab
?The hospital badly needs a virology lab, more manpower and better infrastructure and maintenance. I will take it up with the authorities to increase funding for this hospital,? Mr. Reddy said.
