Dead crows put Sultanpur on avian flu alert

LUCKNOW: After Amethi, presence of bird flu was confirmed in Sultanpur district here on Sunday. Since the avian flu virus was confirmed in wild crows, culling could not be undertaken. All poultry farms and units in the area have been put on surveillance to track further activity of the virus.

Confirming the news, Sultanpur district magistrate Aditi Singh said, "Three days ago, two wild crows were found dead in Haliapur area. Their samples were sent for testing to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal which confirmed the virus."

Highly pathogenic avian flu outbreak was confirmed in Shukla Bazar area of Amethi on March 13, a week after over 350 birds died mysteriously in two villages of the area. State government declared an avian flu alert across the state. Culling of over 850 birds including ducks, hens and pigeons followed thereafter.

No bird flu in Sultanpur poultry farms

LUCKNOW: Bird flu scare in Sultanpur was controlled on Monday a day after avian flu was confirmed in two wild crows. Though district remained on high alert, local administration claimed there was no need to worry. Four days ago, two wild crows were found dead in Haliapur area. Their samples were sent for testing to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal which confirmed the virus.

District magistrate Aditi Singh said, "We conducted massive surveillance exercise wherein more than 100 poultry farms in the core area were scanned. The teams did not come across any diseased bird." She added that a helpline number 05362-241047 has been started to receive possible information or alerts in this regard.
