Greater Noida: As many as 30 peacocks have died in Greater Noida in the last 15 days due to unknown reasons, say villagers and veterinarians.

Ten peacocks died in the last four days, said residents of Patwadi village in Bisrakh. Three peacocks were found battling for life on Monday.

Jitendra Kumar Agarwal, 22, a resident of Patwadi, said the reason behind the deaths was unknown. It could be poison or a disease.

Poaching and a mysterious disease are killing peacocks, India?s national bird, in one of their richest habitats here in Uttar Pradesh. The Bisrakh area in Greater Noida, near Delhi, is home to a huge peacock population.

But as many as 30 of the birds have died in the last fortnight in Patwadi village, according to locals. Of these, 10 died within a week.

Divisional forest officer B Prabhakar said, ?The peacocks seem to be suffering from Newcastle disease in which they suffer a nervous breakdown, showing paralytic symptoms. We are treating them and they are doing fine,? he said.

There have been at least 60 peacock deaths reported in the last three months, with 20 birds found dead near Gurgaon and another 40 in Noida. All the deaths have been attributed to the Newcastle Disease, an acute rapid-spreading respiratory disease caused by a virus for which there is no cure.
