Chemical firm to test site of deadly contamination

SALEM -- A North Carolina chemical company will conduct tests on a rural Salem home today, to determine if it was contaminated by a dangerous pesticide.

Five-year-old Bridget Carlson died Saturday of apparent pesticide poisoning. Her sisters, Rachel and Renae, ages 11 and 8, are hospitalized in serious condition.

Their parents, Don and Mary Carlson, were released Sunday from Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls....

How many more children will die if the states individually regulate this poison?

Looks like the EPA tightened regulations on this pesticide after the girls' deaths.

Too bad that didn't happen after the deaths in 2000, though in this case, it appears that the applicator did not even follow label instructions to apply 15 feet or more away from a building. There have been some criminal charges filed in the case.

A park system in CA has stopped using Fumitoxin because of concerns about safety:

Diamond Bar no longer uses the substance, which the American Association of Poison Control Centers said resulted in 65,000 exposures from 2000 to 2003 with 95 percent caused by ingestion mostly by children under six years old.
