USDA Confirms Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Pennsylvania and Utah

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2022 – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial layer chicken flock in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and a non-commercial backyard flock (non-poultry) in Utah County, Utah.

Samples from the Pennsylvania flock were tested at the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory and samples from the Utah flock were tested at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, both part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. The cases were confirmed at the APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.

APHIS is working closely with state animal health officials in Pennsylvania and Utah on joint incident responses. State officials quarantined the affected premises, and birds on the properties will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease. Birds from the flocks will not enter the food system.

There are confirmed cases of avian flu at two more farms in Lancaster County, WGAL reported Thursday.

Those cases were confirmed Wednesday, the Lancaster-based news organization said, including at Brubaker Farms in East Donegal Township.

The farm where the state’s first positive case in poultry was detected on Saturday is also in East Donegal Township in Lancaster County, which is home to nearly 1,700 of Pennsylvania’s more than 10,300 poultry operations. The farm euthanized 1.4 million chickens in response to the detection...

A highly contagious and deadly strain of avian influenza was confirmed on a sixth Lancaster County poultry operation on Thursday, requiring 18,000 birds to be destroyed in hopes of curtailing the virus’s spread.

The farm’s exact location within the county was not revealed by officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

However, the infected property was identified as a facility producing “commercial broiler breeder pullets” — young birds that would later be grown for meat.

It was the second outbreak of the illness confirmed at a Lancaster County poultry operation this week and the sixth since mid-April...

Bird flu infects Berks County duck operations, marking state's first cases outside of Lancaster County: USDA

Confirmed infections at two commercial duck farms in Berks County mark the first evidence that avian influenza has migrated out of Lancaster County to poultry operations in other parts of the state.

One of the Berks operations is a breeder facility and the other is a meat bird producer, according to a USDA site listing confirmed bird flu cases nationwide.

At the breeder facility, 29,500 birds were affected, according to USDA officials. For the meat bird operation, the number of infected birds was listed at zero as of noon Wednesday. Questions about why a farm with zero birds affected is on the list were sent to both state and federal agriculture officials.

Seven separate infected flocks have been confirmed in Lancaster County since mid-April, affecting 3,845,200 birds — a combination of chickens and ducks, including egg layers, meat birds and pullets...

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Another avian influenza outbreak has been discovered at a commercial poultry farm in Lancaster County, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

It's the eighth poultry operation in the county to suffer an outbreak, the USDA said.

The USDA did not disclose the location of the most recent farm to be affected by the outbreak, which is a typically fatal strain. But 72,300 birds either died of the virus or were depopulated in an effort to prevent its spread.

Outbreaks were also confirmed by the USDA at two other farms in Berks County on Wednesday.

Berks and Lancaster counties are the only two areas in Pennsylvania where avian flu has been detected among domesticated poultry birds....

Bird flu spreads to 3 more commercial flocks in Pa.; 4.2M birds affected

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The count of birds affected by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Pennsylvania reached 4,243,400 as three additional cases were confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The affected birds are among 15 commercial flocks in Berks and Lancaster counties. The three latest impacted flocks all are in Berks County and were confirmed May 14-18.

The federal agency doesn’t identify specific farming operations, and some operators may have experienced more than one outbreak. Buffer zones are established around each site and certain restrictions are placed on the operations.

Affected birds are being destroyed to mitigate the further spread of the highly contagious and deadly disease. The first case in a commercial flock was confirmed on April 15...
