Philadelphia reports first heat wave death in two years; flood watch in effect

On Thursday ? the sixth consecutive day of 90-plus temperatures locally ? Philadelphia reported its first heat-related death since 2016.

The victim was not identified, nor was it disclosed when the person died. Health Department spokesman James Garrow said heat was ?a significant contributing factor? to the death, which occurred during the heat wave that began Saturday and peaked Tuesday.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) ? Health professionals with the Southern Nevada Health District say heat-related deaths are on the rise.


The district reports in 2017 there were 123 heat-related deaths. In 2016, that number was 78.

The Clark County Coroner has already registered 18 heat-related deaths this year. And July, the month considered the deadliest, has just started.

Postal Carrier, 63, Found Dead in Her Truck Amid Record Temperatures Was Months from Retirement

A mail carrier who worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years died on the job Friday, as a massive heat wave hit Los Angeles.

Peggy Frank, 63, was sitting in her mail truck in the Woodland Hills area when she was found unresponsive by a neighbor, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner-Coroner?s office told PEOPLE. Paramedics arrived on the scene and tried to revive Frank, but she was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. local time.

Temperatures in the area that afternoon had reached 117 degrees, CBS Los Angeles reported. An excessive heat warning for the region had even been released by the National Weather Service.

Vermont's death toll from last week's extreme heat wave has risen to four, state Department of Health Spokesman Ben Truman said Monday.

Among the deceased is Mary Myott, 79, of Essex Junction, who died in a home where the temperature had risen to 115 degrees.

Maryland reports first heat-related death

After the state reported its first heat-related death last week, local health officials are asking residents to watch out for warning signs of heat-induced illnesses as more high-temperature days approach this summer.

The first heat-related death reported this year in Maryland was a Prince George?s County man who was between 18 and 44 years old, the Maryland Department of Health said last week.

Desiree Washington sat in the quiet of her living room. The only sound was the white noise of a window air conditioner, cooling the house where her mother died last week in the stifling heat.

It was 95 degrees Tuesday, slightly hotter than July 5, when PSE&G cut the power to the tidy brick ranch at the corner of Shepard Avenue and Hunterdon Street.

"When I walked in here that day, you could not breathe," Washington said.

The death of Linda Daniels was the latest tragedy to strike this family.
