so just a normal triple-reassortant (1998) swine H3N2

humans had that H3 in ~1995 since then it continued to develope
in humans and independently in swine into another direction

30 years apart
like the 1976-vax against Mx

but in H3 antigenic evolution seems to be faster than in H1.

Fujian-flu 2003 had a new H3 only some years different
we get a new H3-vax every 3-5 years


but the elderly >80 years were well protected against Mx
from old infections <1940 .
That's ~30 years down the human lineage and then 100 years
up the swine-lineage, so ~130 years away !

Rumors that the world grows a new mutated flu virus H3N2 are fictitious and untrue. About it, told Armenian News - NEWS.am's chief epidemiologist Ara Asoyan.

"I have a few hours ago, returned from the USA, where he participated in a scientific conference. In Boston, epidemiologists have gathered from around the world. All of this nonsense, there is no flu. I repeat, I have just returned from the United States and responsibly declare it. If something like that happened, I would have known. in North America, we have ~20 events since triple-reassortant-flu
developed in 1998

Fortunately, the "mutant" cannot be transferred from a human being to another human being, he assured.

Two cases have been reported in the United States -- a 46-year-old adult and a seven-month child.

The mutated virus consists of three "pieces" of various flu viruses. It already had come from a human to an animal and returned to a human again.

In the past, CDC received reports of approximately one human infection with a swine influenza virus every one to two years, but in the past few years, about three cases have been reported per year. Increased reporting of human infections with swine influenza could be the result of increased influenza testing capacity and capabilities in public health laboratories.

These trH3N2 viruses are different from the 2009 H1N1 virus that has been circulating in the United States since late April 2009. They are also different from human seasonal influenza A (H3N2) viruses that typically circulate among people during the flu season. Swine trH3N2 viruses commonly circulate in pigs in North America, but rarely infect humans. These viruses are different from the swine classical H1N1 or swine trH1N1 influenza viruses that also circulate in pigs in North America because they have H3N2 surface antigens. Tr H3N2 viruses first emerged in North American swine herds in the late 1990s. The H3 and N2 genes which first emerged in swine flu viruses originated from human seasonal H3N2 influenza viruses that circulated globally among humans in the late 1990s.

Although the vast majority of instances of human infection with animal influenza viruses do not result in human to human transmission, each case should be fully investigated to be sure that such viruses are not spreading among humans and to limit further exposure of humans to infected animals if infected animals are identified. Surveillance for both seasonal and novel influenza viruses is conducted by the CDC and its state and local health partners year round.

As always, time will tell.

We monitor influenza activity all over the world, including influenza like illness, pneumonia, and other diseases that can be misdiagnosed such as dengue, tuberculosis, respiratory diseases, and others, when the actual ailment is flu.

We will be monitoring this novel flu strain along with A/H1N1 and A/H5N1 and will post all developments on the site.

Novel Influenza A Virus:
Two cases of human infection with a novel influenza A virus were reported: one case by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and one case by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Both patients were infected with a swine origin influenza A (H3N2) virus similar to the three other swine origin influenza A (H3N2) viruses previously identified in 2009 and 2010. The Wisconsin case reported contact with pigs in the week preceding symptom onset on September 8, 2010 and required hospitalization. No contact with pigs has been identified in the Pennsylvania case in the week before symptom onset on October 24, 2010; however the case lives in an area close to pig farms. Both patients have fully recovered from their illness. The cases are not related and the viruses from these two cases have some genetic differences, indicating that they did not come from the same source.

Although both investigations are ongoing, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission with this virus in either case. Early identification and investigation of human infections with novel influenza A viruses is critical to evaluate the extent of the outbreak and possible human-to-human transmission. Surveillance for human infections with novel influenza A viruses continues year round.

Over the past 72 hours there has been quite a bit of speculation on the internet regarding 2 recent cases of H3N2 swine influenza contracted by people in different states.

Long time readers of this blog know that while rare, we occasionally will see a novel swine influenza virus jump to humans.

Although the 2009 swine flu pandemic was an exception, most of the time this turns out to be a one-off dead-end transmission, and goes no further.

Which is why – while I was aware of these cases two days ago - with scant details available, I opted to wait until we could get something more reliable than simple conjecture before mentioning them in this blog.

One case was reported in a line item in this week’s MMWR as a novel H3N2 infection in Pennsylvania, although little else was provided.

Today, the CDC has released a comprehensive statement which I am reproducing below.

occur in people with direct exposure to pigs. The patient in Pennsylvania
lives in an area where live pigs are farmed and the patient in Wisconsin
became sick 2 days after attending a state fair where pigs were exhibited.
It's important to note that swine influenza viruses are not transmitted to
humans by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork
products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe.

In the past, CDC received reports of approximately one human infection with
a swine influenza virus every one to 2 years, but in the past few years,
about 3 cases have been reported per year. Increased reporting of human
infections with swine influenza could be the result of increased influenza
testing capacity and capabilities in public health laboratories.

These trH3N2 viruses are different from the 2009 H1N1 virus that has been
circulating in the United States since late April 2009. They are also
different from human seasonal influenza A (H3N2) viruses that typically
circulate among people during the flu season. Swine trH3N2 viruses commonly
circulate in pigs in North America, but rarely infect humans. These viruses
are different from the swine classical H1N1 or swine trH1N1 influenza
viruses that also circulate in pigs in North America because they have H3N2
surface antigens. Tr H3N2 viruses first emerged in North American swine
herds in the late 1990s. The H3 and N2 genes which 1st emerged in swine flu
viruses originated from human seasonal H3N2 influenza viruses that
circulated globally among humans in the late 1990s.

Although the vast majority of instances of human infection with animal
influenza viruses do not result in human to human transmission, each case
should be fully investigated to be sure that such viruses are not spreading
among humans and to limit further exposure of humans to infected animals if
infected animals are identified. Surveillance for both seasonal and novel
influenza viruses is conducted by the CDC and its state and local health
partners year round.

[There are 4 main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated
in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, and H3N1. Most flu viruses circulating in pigs
are referred to as "triple-reassortant" viruses because these flu viruses
contain genes from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses.

Swine triple-reassortant H3N2 influenza viruses commonly circulate in pigs
in North America, but rarely infect humans. The total number of human
infections with swine origin influenza viruses reported to the CDC since
2005 had been 16, and 3 of these reports had been swine origin A (H3N2)
viruses. The Pennsylvania and Wisconsin cases described above bring the
number of reports swine origin A (H3N2) infections in humans in the United
States to 5, and the total of swine origin A influenza A viruses to 18.

The dates of illness onset in the 2 patients are more than 6 weeks apart
and the viruses from the 2 patients have some genetic differences,
confirming that these 2 cases are not linked.

Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs.
Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but
most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to
outbreaks in humans.

Transmission of swine (tr) influenza a viruses to humans has been rare,
even in individuals occupationally exposed to pigs. With the exception of
the swine-origin A (H1N1) 2009 pandemic virus human-to-human transmission
has occurred rarely, if at all.

so, this is presumably how *** started.
One of the rare occurrances of pig2human
but that virus could transmit h2h.

And this happened, _although_ p2h is so rare.

So, there could be many strains out there with
pandemic potential and just occasionally, rarely,
do we see one.
