Aren Duncan - US Secratary of Education is on C-Span now discussing H1N1 and continuity of students education. Wish he'd clued my school district in on this.

The prerecorded session on H1N1 is over. US Secretary of Education, Aren Duncan sighted the reason for keeping the schools open was concern over ensuring nutrition requirements for children in school lunch programs were met. He stated the Department of Education was working with the Department of Agriculture on this problem. The Secretary commended some companies that were providing for the continuation of education given disruptions caused by H1N1. Several school systems, programs and school nurses were praised. A shortage of school nurses was also cited as an ongoing issue.

I heard nothing on encouraging school systems to provide lesson plans to concerned parents who want to self quarantine their children and still continue their children's education during the pandemic. Nothing about allowing temporary in home schooling during the pandemic. Nothing about encouraging teachers to have lesson plans, works sheets and other materials ready in advance for students parents and guardians if SIP is required. Nothing was mentioned about how days lost due to SIP or self Quarantine was to be excused or accounted for. Many of these issues will ultimately have to be decided by state and local school districts. The problem arises that these districts are looking to the Federal government for (CYA) guidelines and guidance.

In my school district parents who want to self quarantine their children are lucky enough to have three options:
1) Submit an plan for home schooling and after approval formally remove the student from their current school or
2) Have the student accepted and enrolled in a online public charter cyber school and formally remove the student from their current school or
3) Enroll them in a private school and formally remove the student from their current school.

Some of these options can take a week or more to accomplish legally.
