Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Amman – August 1, 2026

Event: Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.

Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions. Some airlines in the region have postponed resumption of earlier flight schedules; others have cancelled some routes. Americans in the region should consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation.

Check your flight’s departure status with the airline directly or through:
Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region. Those who do travel to or from the region should monitor information about airport and airline operations.

U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions.

The situation in the Middle East remains fluid. The Iranian regime is unpredictable, as seen by its recent decisions to attack areas in the region without warning or provocations as well as to expand attacks to areas not previously targeted (such as Egypt). Americans should remain vigilant, as merely because U.S. interests or businesses have not been attacked in a country in the past does not ensure their safety.

U.S. Embassy Amman advises all Americans to avoid travel to military bases in Jordan. We remind U.S. citizens that Iran has also attacked civilian and critical infrastructure across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, and other civilian locations.

U.S. citizens should continue to monitor information from the Jordanian government about specific threats and follow instructions, including sirens and other warnings. Please also monitor all Embassy travel advisories and guidance.

Actions to Take:
  • Please visit Jordan’s National Center for Security and Crisis Management website  for public safety guidelines, including explanations of emergency sirens in Jordan.
  • Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings.
  • Avoid all areas where there is a heavy police presence.
  • Monitor local media.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Contact your airline directly for flight change details if your flight is affected.
  • Exercise caution and stay alert at locations publicly associated with the United States.
  • Keep a low profile.
Enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) . STEP enrollment connects you to the U.S. embassy or consulate so you get the latest security updates. It also makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or consulate to contact you in an emergency.
