During 2009, four cases of human infection with novel influenza A viruses, different from the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) strain, were reported to CDC. The four cases of novel influenza A virus infection reported to CDC during 2010, and the eight cases reported during 2011, were identified as swine influenza A (H3N2) virus and are unrelated to the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus. Total case counts are provided by the Influenza Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

I am a bit confused reconciling the MMWR counts with the sequence releases. Is this the second case in Maine (an 8M), or a report of a new third case?

What seems to be throwing me is that we know there were 7 previous cases with the M gene from 2009 H1N1. Was there also one additional trH3N2 infection previously reported in 2011?

After checking some other sources, I think this is the previously reported second case, and that the veterinarian from Indiana might yet be the 9th human infection that still has not appeared in the MMWR (with the first two cases NOT having the M gene from 2009 H1N1).
