The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Departments of Agriculture and Wildlife, are continuing to conduct a comprehensive epidemiological investigation and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI H5N8 wild bird related event. As part of the increased AI surveillance of wild birds (performed by testing hunter harvested birds), an H5N8 with an amino acid sequence at the HA cleavage site that is consistent with highly pathogenic avian influenza has been identified in a wild gadwall duck in the Pacific flyway. HA and NA sequence fragments are essentially identical to that found in the reported gyrfalcon. Update on the Oregon backyard premises as of 2 January 2015: ? A 10 km active surveillance zone has been initiated for avian influenza. - All backyard premises with birds in the 10 km surveillance zone will be monitored and tested for AI. - There are no commercial poultry premises within the 10 km surveillance zone. ? Cleaning and Disinfection (C&D) of the backyard premises has been completed. The backyard premises will be under a monitoring program and release of the quarantine will not occur for at least 90 days following depopulation and is contingent on post C&D environmental testing. ? A thorough epidemiological investigation was conducted in relation to the backyard infected premises. No traces into or out of the infected flock were found and it was determined that the AI H5N8 event was related to wild bird exposure. The HPAI H5N8 virus has NOT been found in commercial poultry anywhere in the United States.
