Dengue toll touches 50

The number of dengue cases reported from different parts of the country rose to 3,613 today, while the toll touched 50.
According to the control room of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), there has been an increase of 206 in the number of dengue cases reported since yesterday. Experts in NVBDCP say the number may be even more due to delay in reporting on the part of the states.
The number of cases in Delhi has risen from 886 on Sunday to 957 today. The number of cases in Uttar Prdaesh has increased from 181 yesterday to 214 today.
Meanwhile, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has reported 41 fresh dengue admissions and one death in the last 24 hours. Naveen Chand, a 23-year-old from Meethapur, died from dengue on Sunday evening.
AIIMS spokesperson and Medical Superintendent, Dr Shakti Gupta, told mediapersons here on Monday that in the last 24 hours, 850 patients had been attended in the screening casualty out patient department with febrile illness.
On Monday, AIIMS Director Dr P. Venugopal constituted four committees for better management of dengue cases. These include the Prevention and Control Committee headed by Professor G.K. Rath, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy; the Clinical Care Commitee headed by Professor P.P. Kotwal from the Department of Orthopaedics and in-charge of Casualty; Media Briefing committee headed by Professor Bir Singh of the Department of Community Medicine; the Documentation Committee headed by Dr T.D. Dogra, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine; and the overall Steering Committee headed by none the AIIMS Director himself.
Briefing mediapersons, Dr D.K. Sharma at AIIMS said, "It has been decided that every Head of Deaprtment will be asked to spare two resident doctors to be posted in casualty on a 8 to 12 hour shift and a faculty member to oversee management of patient care. Besides, fifty interns posted in various departments will be posted in Emergency, Medicine and Paediatrics department which are taking care of dengue patients. This would mean another 150 doctors to manage dengue cases.''
A serpentine queue in front of the fever screening OPD, waiting hours ranging from 90 minutes to six hours and imbalance in the doctor- patient ratio here sums up the nightmarish experience of patients and their relatives.
