The University of Kansas Hospital said today they have admitted a patient who may have the Ebola virus. This unnamed individual was reportedly working on a medical boat near the African west coast, and developed symptoms the hospital worries may be signs of Ebola.

In a statement, the hospital said there is not a significant risk this patient has Ebola, but still a risk. A number of hospital staffers tasked with examining this patient will not come in contact with other patients over the course of that time.
The patient has, of course, been placed in isolation. Two months ago, a pathologist working at this very hospital had spoken out publicly to calm people?s fears about Ebola spreading, putting it into global perspective and saying malaria kills far more around the world.:tiphat:http://www.mediaite.com/online/university-of-kansas-hospital-patient-being-tested-for-ebola/

KU Hospital patient being held in 'strict isolation,' had recently been off west African coast

A patient is being held in "strict isolation" at the University of Kansas hospital after going to the hospital early Monday morning with a high fever and "other serious symptoms," according to a news release.

Since arriving at the hospital Monday morning, the patient, a male, had been placed in an isolated room with no other patients on the floor, said Lee Norman, KU Hospital's chief medical officer in an early evening news conference.

"He's a suspect case (for Ebola)," said Norman.

KU Hospital: Patient admitted at 'low to moderate risk' of Ebola

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The University of Kansas Hospital said a patient who recently worked as a medic on a ship off the coast of West Africa came to the hospital early Monday feeling sick and is being tested for Ebola.

Hospital officials said the patient was at "low to moderate risk" of Ebola but they were taking no chances.

In a statement, hospital officials said the patient was met by staff wearing personal protection equipment and following guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The hospital’s chief medical officer, Dr. Lee Norman, said at a news conference Monday evening that while he could not rule out Ebola, there are many other diseases that fit the patient’s symptoms. Tests to determine a diagnosis are expected no later than the end of the work day Tuesday.

The patient has been placed in an isolated area of the hospital with its own ventilation system, and staff working with him will not treat other patients until a diagnosis is made.

Norman said the patient was a Kansas City, Kan., resident in his 40s. He had been working on a commercial ship connected with the oil industry as a medic.

Norman said that the patient was more likely to have typhoid fever than Ebola. However, if he is determined to have Ebola, Norman said, he will continue to be treated at KU because he probably is in the early stage of the disease.

Jill Chadwick, a spokeswoman for KU Hospital, said the patient had been isolated from the rest of the hospital population.

"We don't want people to be panicked or worried because these people are isolated in the hospital," she said, referring to the patient and those caring for him. "They are not anywhere near the general population."

This is the second Ebola scare at the hospital. In September, a 23-year-old man who had returned home after serving with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone called the hospital concerned that he had contracted the virus. Tests, however, showed he had a severe case of malaria.

Re: University of Kansas Hospital Patient Being Tested for Ebola

Update from 1245 CST- no word back on the testing. It's taking quite a while- almost a day since the man was admitted. As this epidemic progresses, I hope turnaround times improve. It would save a lot of time, money and worry.

Either that, or he's positive and they're readying their press release.

I hope this doesn't indicate a positive test result.

No results yet, but an alternative diagnosis:

The Kansas City, KS, man in his 40s went to the hospital Monday morning with significant weakness and diarrhea and he had previously had a fever. Norman said it was encouraging that the man did not have a fever or internal bleeding, two symptoms of Ebola.

He worked as a medic on a commercial ship off Africa's west coast until about five days ago and treated patients with a variety of conditions. He was exposed to typhoid and Norman said that was the likely cause of his illness.

"I'm hopeful he doesn't have Ebola," Norman said. Putting the patient under isolation is "really about an abundance of caution. ... We can't let our guard down."
