The Uganda Virus Research Institute rules out the deadly hemorrhagic
fevers, Ebola and Marburg from the strange disease that hit Palabek
Ogili Sub County in Lamwo District, affecting 23 people.
Dr. Charles Oyo, the Lamwo District Health Officer, says the illness was
1st reported on 12 Nov [2013] when 19 residents of Padwat Central
village in Padwat Parish were admitted at Palabek Ogili Health Center 3
with various complaints.
On 2 Dec [2013], another 4 people were admitted at the same facility.
Dr. Charles Oyo says the patients were treated for the symptoms they
presented and later discharged after registering remarkable improvements.
The doctor explained that the illness presented without any bleeding
except severe headache, high fevers and general body weaknesses among
other symptoms. Samples were quickly collected and rushed to the virus
Research Institute in Entebbe.
Results of preliminary test results sent back to the district have ruled
out all the deadly hemorrhagic fevers -- Ebola, Marburg and
Congo-Crimean fever -- that recently killed people in Agago District.
According to Dr. Oyo, a Rapid Response Unit is on the ground carrying
out surveillance of the Sub County for new cases. The Unit is also
collecting further samples for tests to try to identify the real disease
affecting the people.
Dr. Oyo says the institute is conducting further tests to ascertain
whether the disease is West Nile fever or not, after ruling out yellow
fever as well.
Ochen Mathew Akiya met the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health
in Kampala and briefed him on the situation of the strange illness. He
requested the Ministry of Health to dispatch a team to the district for
proper investigation.
The team was expected to arrive at the district over the weekend [7-8
Dec 2013] but they haven't set foot in the district.

Laboratory tests conducted by the Uganda Virus Research Institute [UVRI]
have ruled out Ebola, Marburg, and Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever. The
report indicates that additional tests are ongoing to determine if
flaviviruses are responsible for the current wave of infections.
Additional information on findings from the laboratory testing that is
already underway will be appreciated.
