The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) South West is reminding parents and carers of the symptoms of both scarlet fever and chickenpox following a rise in cases across the country. Levels for both infections are in line with what we expect to see at this time of year, but there has been an increase compared to 2021 when measures during the pandemic such as social distancing, enhanced hygiene and school and nursery closures kept cases below average.
Scarlet fever is caused by a bacteria called group A streptococcus and can complicate other skin infections such as chickenpox, when both infections are circulating, as is currently the case. A total of 3,488 notifications of scarlet fever were reported between September 2021 and March 2022 in England compared to an average of 8,605 for this same period in the previous 5 years...
Scarlet fever symptoms with double figures of cases in Leicestershire in one week

A spring surge is happening in cases of scarlet fever. Numbers of new infections of the contagious disease in Leicestershire have hit double figures in the space of one week this month.
According to Public Health England data, there were 20 cases recorded in the week to April 14 across Leicester and Leicestershire. Eight of these alone were in Hinckley and Bosworth area.
These figures are no higher than in most areas nationwide currently. But with infections happening it pays to know the signs to look out for....

Health chiefs are urging residents to be "vigilant" due to a spike in scarlet fever infections across Derbyshire.
Statistics from the UK Health Security Agency show that in the most recent week (to June 19) there were 14 new cases of scarlet fever in Derbyshire, with 53 cases in the past four weeks and 103 cases in the past eight weeks...
Strep A: Two children in hospital and 30 ill after scarlet fever outbreak at Carmarthenshire school

Two children have been hospitalised and around 30 are ill following an outbreak of scarlet fever at a primary school.
Public Health Wales (PHW) said around 30 cases of scarlet fever and three cases of Strep A have been identified in pupils at Brynaman Primary School, in Carmarthenshire.
Invasive Group A Streptococcal disease is caused by the same bacteria as scarlet fever.
PHW said while they understand concern from parents the "majority of these childrenwill recover with proper treatment."...
