Measles hit Iganga, 60 hospitalised

A child has died and 60 others admitted to various health centres following a measles outbreak in Iganga District, health officials have said.

Dr David Muwanguzi, the district health officer, said five cases of blood samples taken to Uganda Virus Institute tested positive.

The first cases of the disease, which is affecting children between one and five years, were reported in November last year. Dr Muwanguzi said Makutu, Buyanga and Busembatya sub-counties are the worst hit by the ailment...

Kiruhura 19th district to file measles cases

At least one person has been confirmed dead and 38 others hospitalised following an outbreak of measles in Kiruhura, the district health officials have said.

The District Health Officer, Dr Ivan Kaggwa, said they received reports of the outbreak last week when one child had already died of the disease and they later ascertained that other 38 are affected.

He said measles has hit Kanyaryeru and Kinoni sub-counties in Nyabushozi County. The dead child was from Rwaburondo Village in Kinoni. Dr Kaggwa said in Kinoni, they have registered 30 cases, six cases in Kanoni and two in Kanyaryeru...

Parents to blame for measles outbreak, say health workers

Health workers have blamed the outbreak of measles in 18 districts on parents? failure to take their children for immunisation.

A visit to the newly-opened Naguru Hospital revealed that more than 100 cases had been registered at the facility since February 24, with the majority of the affected children from Naguru, Kinawataka and Banda suburbs of Kampala.

The officer in-charge of the pediatric ward, Uganda Friendship hospital-Naguru, Dr Justine Nalwadda, yesterday said many mothers are reluctant to take their children for immunisation...

For the past eight years, there has been little activity in the measles ward at the Stanfield 1A Building, the paediatric wing of Uganda?s Mulago Referral Hospital.



In fact, for the better half of this period, it was closed because there were hardly any measles patients. Today, at least one patient dies daily at the measles ward as the country struggles to contain an epidemic that started last October.

Admissions to the measles ward soared to a record 183, 206 and 363 cases in the months of February, March and April respectively this year, and the severity of the cases has increased.

Deaths statistics have increased at the ward from an average 0.8 to 1.8 per cent to 2.4 to 3.4 per-cent mortality per month since the beginning of the year.
