Uganda Anthrax Outbreak Kills 82 Hippos In Reserve

Uganda ? Ugandan officials say an anthrax outbreak has killed 82 hippos in the last month and a half.

National anthrax task force spokesman Nicholas Kauta says the outbreak began in Queen Elizabeth National Park in June and has also killed nine buffalo.

He said that no humans are known to have contracted the deadly disease during the outbreak and that tourism has been unaffected...

Two hippos have died of suspected anthrax at Nkibanga island in
Kalangala district. The district is surrounded by Lake Victoria. The
death of the hippos brings the death toll to 14 since the beginning
of July 2010.

The MP for Kyamuswa, Moses Kabuusu, has said the district leaders
have not established whether the animals have died of anthrax.

Recently, many hippos died of suspected anthrax in Western Uganda.
Uganda Wildlife Authority is investigating the death of the hippos.

Suspected anthrax outbreak spreads to Mbarara

THE recent outbreak of Anthrax which killed two people and three animals in Sheema district is suspected to have spread to the neighbouring sub-county of Bubaare in Mbarara district.

Fred Kafureeka, 55 and his colleague only identified as Boroba died last week after they reportedly skinned a carcass of a cow. While five people were admitted in Kabwohe health centre IV since the disease reportedly broke out in Mashojwa village, Muzira Parish in Kagango Sub-county on October 25.

The outbreak of the disease affected the Muslim community in the district as they celebrated Idd Adhuha without meat because veterinary officials restricted the movement of livestock and slaughtering of animals in the district.

Dr. Christopher Kyambadde, the district veterinary officer, said more four cows died in a suspected anthrax outbreak in Kabwohe-Intendero town council, Kagango Sub County in Sheema district on Sunday and Monday morning bringing the number of the dead animals to seven.
