Just two of the cases -- one in Arizona and one in Mississippi -- resulted in death, according to the report in the Aug. 22 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

But Roger Nasci, Ph.D, of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases in Fort Collins, Colo., said that the number of cases could increase dramatically in the main transmission season from now through September.

The median age of the individuals infected with West Nile virus was 48 and more than half (58%) were males.
