U.S. wants vaccine for 20 million 'key' people produced

THE WASHINGTON POST

WASHINGTON -- The federal government has asked three drug companies to make enough swine flu vaccine to immunize at least 20 million people in key positions in health care, national security and emergency services, officials said yesterday.

The order, announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, is part of a $1 billion investment in immediate production and testing of vaccine against the newly emerged strain of H1N1 flu virus. Further orders for potentially hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine are expected.

Also yesterday, CDC scientists unveiled the most detailed genetic examination yet of the novel virus, finding that the new swine flu might have been circulating undetected in pigs for years.

That report, in the journal Science, still doesn't solve the bigger mystery of when and where the virus made the jump to people and what genetic change allowed it to start spreading so rapidly. The virus was first detected last month, and at least 42 countries now have confirmed it in more than 11,000 people. At least 85 people have died of it.

The order is for bulk quantities of a killed version of the virus and two different "adjuvants," chemical additives that boost the immune system's response and allow a lower dose of vaccine to be used, which in turn stretches the supply.

A useable vaccine would not be ready until late summer. Special permission from the Food and Drug Administration will be needed for the adjuvants to be used.

The government's pandemic preparedness plan divides the U.S. population into five tiers of priority for getting vaccine. The first tier, which comprises about 24 million people, includes deployed armed forces, critical health-care workers, fire, police and ambulance workers, pregnant women and small children.

Also yesterday, an official of the World Health Organization said that agency is reviewing its pandemic threat alert system to see whether its definition of a full-scale pandemic should be revised.

Information from the Associated Press was included in this story.

The fact that they haven't included essential infrastructure maintenance personnel in that group, may imply that they don't expect a widespread highly-virulent outbreak.

If/when the virulence factor increases dramatically, I hope there is enough vaccine for minimal infrastructure maintenance.

.

What will be interesting is to see how many health professionals and other key people actually take the vaccination.

May only. I don't see a clear link to such perception.

Thay would hammered out that, because of the timelines, etc.

Why hoping that it would exists initialy more vaccines for the masses, if such computation is not contemplated in the USA pandemic vaccine guidelines, where it was maked a clear distance from "neccessary citizens" and the others.

The others would receive the vaccines (if enaugh prepared after) only after a half year, or even a year, as actualy stated by the production vaccines timelines.

I understand your doubts of a new vaccine collaterals fallouts,
but I'm sure that your dose could be useful to many chronic illnessed humans, or familiy members.

So, all of you who will not accepted the vaccination, but take your chances with the illness, please donate yours dose shots to the more needest.

Don't forget that are many chances you would abruptly change your mind if the virus would acquire antiviral resistance, or became more nasty or deadly ...

I was thinking the same thing. What concerns me is the possibility that health care workers, or other "key" people, would be coerced into having the vaccine--"You're a risk to everyone else if you don't," etc. Or told outright that they'd be fired if they didn't take the vaccine. When I was an EMT, we were required to have the hepatitis B vaccine. I avoided it only by being conveniently unavailable every time it was being given, until the point when I moved out of the area and was no longer in that EMS system. But everyone else was eventually forced to take it if they wanted to remain in EMS.

And yes, tropical, you can have my dose.

Is that in order? ie #1 priority = deployed armed forces???
Surely the most logical and important #1 priority would be critical health care workers?

:D

Well, thank you Liz!

But don't forget your decision,

in case of neccessity I shall expect you deliver it to me by plain if neccessary (I would pay the expencies) ...

Just let me know when the ticket's in the mail

I would check the results of the first guinea human inoculations (to cross check the various Au. like B. fallouts), than I sent the tickets ... :)

Sounds like they aren't going to bother with a H1N1+H5N1 vaccine then? Don't think I'll bother then.

WHAT a pity they didn't put their one billion $ into speeding up the development of a universal DNA flu vaccine.

That would save people having to fork out money every year on vaccines and anti-virals.... ah, of course, no money in that is there....silly me.

Yep, exactly.

Is such a thing even possible? I don't know enough to speculate, but it seems likely that the researchers would have been talking about it if it were.

Re: U.S. wants vaccine for 20 million 'key' people produced

The idea has been around since the 1990s. I think they lack research grants.

Here's one article (written in 2006) to start you off.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19025564.100-todays-bird-flu-vaccines-will-have-to-do.html?full=true

I found lots of papers and articles about universal vaccines....I couldn't see how a vaccine made with the current form of the virus was going to protect anyone from the future mutations (all the experts says it's a very unstable strain) so I did some research.
