U.N. Sued for Haiti Cholera Epidemic

Five Haitians sued the United Nations on Wednesday for causing a cholera outbreak starting in 2010 that left thousands dead after a devastating earthquake that year.

While legal experts say the case is a long shot?the U.N. claims immunity in the countries where it operates?it could ramp up pressure on the body to compensate the victims. The U.N. said in 2011 fecal matter from Nepalese peacekeepers that was improperly disposed of was the cause of the outbreak. Some 8,300 Haitians have died of cholera since and hundreds of thousands more sickened, according to the Haitian government.

Earlier this year, the U.N. said it turned down compensation claims by families of the dead...
