<!-- U.N. death toll from Haiti quake reaches 61 --><!-- Reuters -->UNITED NATIONS, Jan 21 (Reuters) - The death toll for the United Nations in Haiti has reached 61, the greatest loss of life the world body has suffered from a single incident in its 65-year history, U.N. officials said on Thursday.

The number of U.N. workers killed by the Jan. 12 earthquake, which caused the organization's Haiti peacekeeping mission's headquarters and other buildings to collapse, involved 25 civilian U.N. workers, 24 military personnel and 12 police, spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Chief U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said that $207 million had been received toward an emergency U.N. appeal for aid funds, and $106 million pledged. He said the amount received so far was 36 percent of the requested sum of $575 million.

Separately, Nesirky was asked about media reports the Haitian government had rejected an offer from the Dominican Republic to send troops to Haiti. The two countries, which share the island of Hispaniola, have a long history of tense relations.

He said that, on the contrary, the Dominican Republic would be contributing to an enlarged Haiti peacekeeping force totaling 12,651 troops and police.

The United Nations has held a memorial service in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, to remember dozens of its workers killed in the earthquake. People hugged each other as the list of 85 confirmed UN fatalities, including mission head Hedi Annabi, was read out.

Former UN mission chief Edmond Mulet told UN staff that their continuing work for Haiti was the best memorial to colleagues who died.

As many as 200,000 people died in the 12 January earthquake.

An estimated 1.5 million people have also been left homeless.

'Eloquent memorial'

Several hundred UN employees, local staff, peacekeepers and representatives of the diplomatic community and Haitian government on Thursday attended the memorial service within the UN compound in the Haitian capital.

Eighty-five UN employees died in the 12 January earthquake, but dozens more remain unaccounted for.

At the memorial, a visibly emotional Mr Mulet read a message from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"To you I say: we are with you in spirit. To those no longer with us I say: we will never forget you."

The number of UN personnel killed in the recent quake in Haiti has reached 94, while another eight staff remain unaccounted for, a spokesman for the UN secretary general said on Monday.

The UN Headquarters in the Christopher Hotel was leveled in the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince on January 12, killing over 212,000 people and leaving more than 1 million homeless.

"As of today, we can officially confirm the deaths of 94 UN staff, including four people who worked for the UN under a separate contract," Martin Nesirky said at a news briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York. "Eight people, including two contract workers, are still missing."

It is the highest single-tragedy death toll among the UN staff in the history of the organization, which was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations.
