Two New Jersey children are recovering from a viral infection that caused weakness and pain in their limbs, a state Department of Health spokeswoman said Friday.

The children, a boy and a girl under the age of 14, had been hospitalized but were discharged in October, the spokeswoman, Donna Leusner, said. They are recovering, she said.

Although limb weakness is a symptom of severe infections caused by the Enterovirus D68, the respiratory illness that has sickened hundreds of children nationwide and caused the death in September of 4-year-old Eli Waller of Hamilton Township, it is not to blame in these two cases, Leusner said.
