Tokyo market ends higher on government's plan to buy stocks

Tokyo - Tokyo stocks ended Friday trading higher as the market was cheered by fresh reports about Japan's plan to use public funds to buy stocks. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average rose 110.49 points, or 1.48 per cent, to close at 7,568.42.

The broader Topix index of all first section issues was also up 14.18 points, or 1.91 per cent, to 756.71. For the week, the Nikkei went up 2.05 per cent, and the Topix also rose 2.32 per cent. On currency markets at midday (0300 GMT), the dollar traded at 97.52-57 yen, down from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 97.92-95 yen. The euro traded at 1.2723-28 dollars, up from late Thursday's quote of 1.2708-11 dollars, and at 124.14-19 yen, down from 124.46-50 yen.
