ProMED just produced this, quoting SAIDR. Does anyone know what the story is with the red date? I have to assume that is simply an error (maybe a date from a previous case?). ProMED EAFR seems to think the patient was hospitalized on November 15 for an unrelated condition, then took ill with H5N1 on January 6, but how would she have contact with poultry while hospitalized for 52 days?
Was one of the previous H5N1 cases hospitalized on November 15?

91st human case of avian influenza in Egypt

A 20 year old woman began experiencing symptoms [of avian influenza
(H5N1) virus infection] on 6 Jan 2010. She had been admitted to Beni
Suef Chest Hospital on 15 Nov 2009. Her family reported she had
contact with sick and dead poultry. She was reported to be in a
stable condition on 13 Jan 2010. The MOH [Ministry of Health]
reported that this was the 91st case of highly pathogenic avian
influenza [H5N1 virus infection] in Egypt. Location: Beni Suef
Governorate, Beba District.
Source of report: Dr Amr Kandeel, undersecretary for preventative
affairs, MOH, and Dr Samir Refaie, head of Epidemiology and
Surveillance Unit, MOH.

[The lapse of time between admission of the patient to hospital and
the appearance of symptoms of avian influenza virus infection (about
52 days) is unusual. It would be interesting to know when the
diagnosis of avian influenza virus infection was confirmed and the
precise reason for the patient's initial hospitalization.
