Tick outbreak reaches disaster level in Hurungwe
Herald Reporter
Communal farmers in Hurungwe District have resorted to zero tillage or hiring out tractors for tillage after tick-borne diseases left their cattle too weak to plough.
The disease is spreading fast due to inadequate dipping chemicals. The most affected areas are Birimahwe, Katenhe and Chiva.
Ward 25 Councillor Lovemore Mushawasha said the problem of ticks in his area had become the biggest hurdle to farmers? activities as draught power was affected.
"As a result of these infestations, most beasts have turned weak and bony ? some beasts are limping in all their legs as a result of ticks. It would really be ruthless for a farmer to yoke such animals for strenuous tasks such as ploughing as they quickly breakdown and surrender," he said.
Clr Mushawasha said the ticks were also affecting humans.....
