The number of probable swine flu cases in Monterey County jumped from six to 9 on Friday, according to the county's health department.

The number of confirmed cases of the new virus remains at five.

The fear over the new flu, a combination of swine, bird and human flus, has calmed since it was first discovered. As scientists studied the illness, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered it was no more virulent the regular seasonal flu.

New viruses worry health officials because humans have built no immunity to them.

The CDC and Monterey County Health Department recommends frequent hand to prevent illness. Anyone who is feeling sick should stay home.
