Three children have now died of complications from the H1N1 flu at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, which on Monday was the setting for the national rollout of a new vaccine for the novel virus.

Dr. Keith English, medical director of infectious diseases at Le Bonheur, mentioned that three children had died from complications of the flu in remarks before the vaccines were administered to health care workers.

However, the vast majority of local flu cases have been mild.

About 6,000 children have been treated at the hospital for flu-like symptoms. Of that number, 160 have required hospitalization and 20 of those were treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit, English said.

Jennifer Parris, a hospital spokeswoman, said the third child, a 12-year-old boy with underlying health issues, died Thursday.

About 100 doses of the vaccine in its nasal mist form arrived at the hospital Monday. The vaccinations were administered to Le Bonheur personnel and to health care workers from the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department.

Le Bonheur and another hospital in Indianapolis were the settings for the public rollout of the vaccination campaign.

Health care workers are receiving the vaccinations first. The first person in Tennessee to receive a vaccine was Holly Smith, a mother of two young children and a Le Bonheur nurse who works with infants.

A third local child has died from the swine flu.

On the same day that workers at Le Bonheur Children?s Medical Center started receiving vaccinations for the swine flu, hospital officials confirmed that a 12-year-old boy died Thursday. The boy had underlying health issues that likely contributed to his death, Le Bonheur spokesman Sara Burnett said.

Hospital officials couldn?t release any more details, including where the boy was from or where he went to school.

This follows the death of 12-year-old Michael Howse Sept. 7 and a still-unidentified girl Sept. 23. The girl also had underlying health issues, but it was unclear whether Howse had conditions that made him more susceptible to the virus.
